Stop Guessing Your VA Paperwork: The Ultimate Interactive Guide for VA Form 21-686c

A free, interactive wizard that builds a personalized checklist for your exact VA dependent claim. No more guessing which forms or certificates you actually need.

Hello Kevin

Take a fellow vet—let’s call him Kevin. Like many of us, Kevin sat down to update his VA dependents figuring it would be a quick, one-and-done process. He printed out the paperwork, filled out the sections he thought applied to him, mailed it off, and waited.

Months later, Kevin got a letter: his claim was stalled. Why? Because he didn’t realize he needed a completely separate form for his college-age kid. So, he hunted down that specific form, filled it out, and resubmitted. Then, another delay—he had missed a required section because of a technicality with how the VA views dependent status.

Avoid the revolving door

Stories like Kevin’s happen every day. Veterans go back and forth with the VA multiple times, constantly being told they need just one more piece of evidence or one more specific form that they weren’t prepared for. It is exhausting, frustrating, and completely unnecessary.

When looking at this frustrating cycle, I realized something: the VA instructions are a maze, but the logic behind them is actually just a giant flowchart. I figured if I could map it out, no veteran would ever have to guess their way through this process like our hypothetical Kevin did.

That frustration is exactly why I built this simple, interactive wizard. I wanted something anyone could use to get it right the first time.

Change is constant

Why is VA Form 21-686c So Confusing?

If you are a veteran receiving VA disability compensation or a pension, adding or removing a dependent from your award requires filing VA Form 21-686c (Application Request to Add and/or Remove Dependents).

But here is where veterans usually get stuck: What evidence do I actually need to submit? Does the VA need my marriage certificate? Do I need to send my child’s birth certificate? What if my child is 19 and in college? What if I am trying to claim a dependent parent?

The rules change wildly depending on your specific circumstances. For example:

  • Standard Marriages vs. Common-Law: If you had a standard civil ceremony in the US, you generally don’t need to submit your marriage certificate upfront unless the VA explicitly asks for it or there is a discrepancy. But if you have a common-law marriage, you have to submit multiple supporting forms (like VA Form 21-4170 and 21P-4171).
  • School-Age Children (18-23): Once a child turns 18, they are removed from your award unless they are attending an approved school. To keep or add them, you have to submit VA Form 21-674 (Request for Approval of School Attendance).
  • Dependent Parents: This is a massive trap. Many veterans try to add a dependent parent using Form 21-686c. You actually can’t. You must use VA Form 21P-509.
  • Pension vs. Disability: If you are on Veterans Pension rather than standard disability compensation, the rules and forms change again (often requiring forms like the 21P-0516-1 or 21P-0517-1).

How the Interactive Wizard Helps You

Instead of reading through 15 pages of dense VA instructions and hoping you didn’t miss a fine-print exception, the Interactive VA Form 21-686c Assistant does the heavy lifting for you.

Here is how it works:

  1. Select Your Goal: Tell the wizard if you are adding a spouse, adding children, removing a dependent, or doing a mix of all of them at once.
  2. Select Your Circumstances: Check the boxes that apply to your exact life situation (e.g., “Standard Civil Ceremony,” “Biological Child Under 18,” and “18-23 Years Old and in School”).
  3. Get Your Custom Checklist: The wizard instantly generates a printable checklist telling you exactly which sections of VA Form 21-686c you must fill out (e.g., Sections I, II, III, and X), and exactly what additional forms or evidence you need to attach to your claim.

You can even print the checklist or save it as an image to keep with your records so you know exactly what you packed in the envelope.

Common Scenarios Covered by the Tool:

  • Adding a spouse to VA disability benefits
  • Adding a child, stepchild, or adopted child to VA disability
